HOLISM & NUTRITION

Updated: Jul 5

Holistic Nutrition is Inspired by the Principles of Holism.

Sometimes when I meet people they say: "Oh, I thought it was 'wholeistic' not 'holistic'."

Concepts of Holism

(Philosophy Basics):

  • The parts cannot exist independently of the whole.

  • The whole is not equal to the sum of the parts- they are interconnected beyond explanation.

How Can We Apply This to Nutrition & Lifestyle?

HOLISM & NUTRITION:

Natural foods contain a balance of nutrients, unnamed substances and energies that cannot be bottled, found in a vitamin or mineral supplement, or fortified into a food.

The idea of refining our food and then re-fortifying it to make it nutritious again, goes against the philosophy of holism.

A natural spectrum cannot be artificially created.

Here is an example of how supplementing the body with one single nutrient can throw us into imbalance..

The link above is a CBC news article about a women who was supplementing with biotin. It threw off her thyroid levels, she gained weight, had low energy and the doctor's didn't know what was going on, since taking supplements is as easy as heading to a corner store.

What is a Holistic Approach?

Google the top foods high in biotin (such as nuts, seeds, avocados, wholegrains) and learn how to prepare these foods to ensure complete digestion and assimilation. This way not only will the body gain biotin, but it will get the other synergistic nutrients involved with maintaining balance within the body (such as other Bvitamins, vitaminE, fibre, protein, fat, etc..). This synergistic energy will bring levels up naturally and not throw off the body's balance.

Nutrients work interdependently of one another- this means that they cooperate & work as a team.

They absorb and interact more efficiently when given in their natural state.

They play an important role in fueling various metabolic pathways within the body- together.

This idea understands the body as a working entity, one that is connected and flowing.

Together, a holistic approach and modern medicine can make a great team. Advances in technology allow us to see inside the body, but then we must not forget the traditional beliefs of holism to regain balance.

The philosophy of Holism roots deep in the foundation of Sam's Wellness, this website and my nutrition appointments.
